Statement on the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity

According to the Red Book of Venezuelan Fauna, 617 species of animals and 341 species of plants are threatened in the country. Habitat loss is one of the main threats they face.

Venezuela is considered a megadiverse country, ranking worldwide; third in plant richness, fourth according to its amphibian diversity, and sixth with respect to its bird richness (Aguilera et al. 2003). However, knowledge of biodiversity in Venezuela is quite limited, since the inventories that have been carried out are not very intensive and have been developed in a spatially and temporally incongruent manner. For this reason, new species records are still regularly reported within states, regions or for the entire country. Currently, and according to the Red Book of Venezuelan Fauna, there are 617 species of animals and 341 species of plants threatened in the country; with degradation and habitat loss being the main threat they face.
