Publication: August 27, 2017.

Synopsis: The opening of the so-called Orinoco Mining Arc (Arco Minero del Orinoco, AMO) to mining exploitation is a worrying threat to one of the areas of greatest biological and cultural diversity in Venezuela. For this reason, Provita, the Venezuelan Society of Ecology, and EXPLORA Nature Projects, in a collaborative and multidisciplinary effort, have compiled and developed two special editions of EXPLORA magazine covering all the aspects that a project of this scope entails — both ecologically and in terms of forest loss, contamination of water sources, and the social and health spheres.

Objectives

  • Disseminate relevant information based on scientific evidence that allows people to understand the possible impacts of the AMO, so that an objective opinion can be formed on this highly politicized and controversial project.
  • Promote social oversight and social and environmental responsibility.
  • Understand the implications of the Orinoco Mining Arc.

Events organized

  • Symposium on the regional implications of the Orinoco Mining Arc during the I Latin American and Caribbean Congress on Conservation Biology; congress declaration on the regional implications of the Mining Arc https://lacccb2018.org/orinoco-mining-arc-1/
